GOVERNMENT: Power and Authority

GOVERNMENT:
What is the difference between Power and Authority?
.
Power is the capacity to influence another's behaviour through coercion. Power is the capacity to make laws (usually selfish laws) and force obedience to the laws. Power involves the use of force to make someone do what he does not want to do. It involves threat and sanction. Power is mostly associated with absolute government e.g military dictators, absolute monarchs,e.t.c.
.
Authority is legal power. Authority is the legal right to make laws. When Power is legal, it becomes Authority. Authority connotes the acceptance to rule by the people. The Constitution and the people are the main sources of Authority. Authority is mostly associated with a democratic setting.
