A person who writes novels is called a ´novelist´,a person who writes plays is called a ´dramatist´ or ´playwright´ and a person who writes poems is called a ´poet´.
However, the word ´author´ can be used for both novel (prose) and drama and even poetry. E.g
-Who is the ´author´ of Faceless? (prose)
-Who is the ´author´ of Othello? (drama)
-Who is the ´author´ of Ambush? (poetry)
.
.
NB; As a good Literature student,it is important to know them by these terms rather than calling all of them ´authors´.
